Objectives, Goals and Justifications

The project aims to have strong social and economic impact, through leading to decisive improvement of the teaching of mathematics and science in Brazil, as well as by key scientific and technological contributions to strategic sectors, such as petrol engineering, climate and weather prediction, energy distribution and biotechnology.

Details about the project?s specific scientific objectives and expected results are given in part 2 of the proposal. In addition we aim to substantially increase the number of students applying to graduate programs in mathematics and related areas, leading to an increment of the overall number of PhDs formed in Brazil.

Moreover, the institute will foster a greater participation of the mathematical community in the activities related to improving the teaching of mathematics and science, at all levels.

Another important objective is the increment of the scientific and technological production, including scientific publications, in the areas of activity of the institute. At the same time, the circulation of post-docs will be significantly enhanced.
