A Brief Description

Brazilian Mathematics has now a solid international prestige, being qualified by the International Mathematical Union in the same group of countries as Australia, China, Hungary, Holland, India, Poland and Spain based on its scientific activity. The Virtual Institute of Excellence - the Millennium Science Institute "A Global Integrated Advancement of the Brazilian Mathematics and a Contribution to the Development of Mathematics in Latin America" is a vehicle to providing a new dimension to this fundamental area for our scientific and technological development. It's certainly mobilizing the national leadership in this domain to achieve a new level of excellency through the following goals:

• The number of centers of competence in mathematics is being substantially amplified in the different regions of the country;
• The research activity has been more comprehensive, encompassing applications and computation modeling concerning, for instance, extraction of oil, climate and weather prediction, modeling of biological systems and others;
• Special attention is being given to the nurturing of Ph.D. students, aiming at amplifying the number and diversifying the areas. The same applied to Post-Doctoral programs that is resulting in a bigger number of active researchers in the area;
• Directly support is given to emerging centers, preferably in the Northern, Northeastern and Center Western regions of Brazil;
• A pilot program for improving mathematical teaching at the secondary and fundamental levels is being implemented. Also one for improving the diffusion of mathematics and the search for talents through the National Olympiads. In the latter, especial attention is given to increase the participation of Brazil in International Olympiads and to the Regional Olympiads in Brazil;
• The scientific cooperation among Brazilian researchers as well as with those of the main Latin America centers and at the Northern Hemisphere has being increasing substantially. In particular, at several Fields Medallists are taking part in this project, that is, they shall belong to such a Virtual Institute of Excellence.
